THE 2000s: DIGITAL CHAOS

Y2K paranoia, low-rise denim, and the dawn of the digital panopticon.

The early 2000s are the first decade of fashion that was documented in real time by the people wearing it. MySpace, LiveJournal, early Blogspot. The photos were terrible, overexposed, slightly blurry, taken in nightclub bathrooms with early digital cameras. This was also the documentation.

Y2K fashion is having its revival moment precisely because it is now old enough to be nostalgic and recent enough to still be legible. The low-rise jean. The butterfly clip. The metallic halter top. The Von Dutch hat. These were not mistakes of taste, they were a coherent aesthetic language for a specific cultural moment: the brief, giddy period when the internet felt like an opportunity rather than a condition.

The images in this series were deliberately shot to feel like documentation rather than editorial, the visual aesthetic of that decade's self-documentation, its accidental intimacy, its specific chaos. The clothes are period-accurate. The feeling of being slightly too much, in exactly the right way, is also accurate.
