THE 2010s: ALGORITHMIC PERFECTION
Instagram face, athleisure, and the homogenization of beauty.
Instagram launched in October 2010. By 2015 it had 400 million monthly active users. By 2016, fashion had reorganized itself around a question that had never previously existed: what photographs well?
The result was a peculiar convergence. Faces began to resemble each other more closely, not because beauty standards had narrowed, but because the same filters, the same lighting setups, the same contouring techniques were being applied worldwide. Instagram face is not a metaphor. It is a documented phenomenon: a specific combination of features, slightly larger eyes, a narrower nose, fuller lips, smoother skin, that the platform's aesthetic rewarded with engagement.
The clothes became backdrops. The backgrounds became content. The collection stopped being the point and the image of the collection became the point. This is the decade that produced the most photographed fashion in history and perhaps the least considered.
These images ask what it looks like to dress for an algorithm. The answer is uncomfortable and extremely stylish.
