KINETIC
Velocity as a garment. Runway momentum frozen in high contrast.
We have been taught to think of fashion as static, to look at a garment the way we look at a painting, as a finished object. KINETIC was built as an argument against that assumption.
The collaboration began with a simple observation: the runway walk is one of the most precisely choreographed movements in contemporary performance, and almost nobody photographs it as movement. They photograph the pause at the end. The freeze. We wanted the thing itself.
The technical challenge was exposure time. Too slow and the image collapses into blur. Too fast and you lose the sense of momentum that defines the garment in motion. Julianne worked at between 1/40 and 1/80 of a second, which preserves the razor sharpness of the face while the extremities, the hands, the feet, the hem, retain the suggestion of velocity.
The garment is architectural dark fabric. It was chosen specifically because it holds its geometry in motion rather than softening. You see the silhouette traveling. That is the image.
