Sylvain Morel — The Development Process
Known affectionately (and fearfully) as 'The Butcher' by industry insiders, VLT's Head of Development explains why 99% of aspiring models fail, and why rejection is the most valuable thing an agency can offer.
Sylvain Morel does not mince words. Over the last two decades, he has scouted and developed some of the most defining faces of a generation. He is also famous for terminating contracts within three months if a model lacks the necessary psychological resilience. We spoke in his Paris office, surrounded by hundreds of polaroids of faces that didn't make the cut.

They call you 'The Butcher'. Does that bother you?
Not at all. A butcher removes the fat to leave the prime cut. This industry is drowning in delusion. Every kid with a ring light and ten thousand TikTok followers thinks they are the next face of Saint Laurent. My job is to shatter that illusion as quickly as possible. It saves everyone a lot of time.

What is the single biggest misconception young talent have when they sign with VLT?
That the work is done. They think signing the contract is the finish line. In reality, signing with us is just buying a lottery ticket where you still have to run a marathon. The physical aesthetic gets you in the room. What keeps you in the room is discipline, intellect, and the ability to handle relentless, soul-crushing rejection without blinking.

What makes you drop a model from development?
Complaining about call times. Being rude to a styling assistant. A lack of curiosity. If a model shows up to a shoot and doesn't know who the photographer is, or hasn't bothered to look at the moodboard, I drop them. You cannot be a passive mannequin anymore. You have to be an active collaborator.

How has the definition of 'beauty' changed since you started scouting?
Twenty years ago, beauty was symmetrical, blonde, and aggressively commercial. Today, perfection is boring. I am looking for a flaw that arrests the eye. A strange nose, a gap in the teeth, an asymmetrical jawline. I want faces that look like they have a secret they refuse to tell you. Standard beauty is easily reproducible by AI now. Character is not.

What is your advice to someone who just got rejected by VLT?
Go read a book. Go study film. Live a life. If you attach your self-worth to whether I think your cheekbones catch the light well, you will be miserable forever. Fashion is a business of selling dreams, but you have to wake up eventually.
